Summary   

Whether we like it or not, computers and digital photography has taken over from films and slide projectors.

Why are there two versions?

  • The A4 version is designed to be viewed on the screen or printed on normal paper, one page per sheet.
  • The A5 version is designed so that you can make it up into a booklet. However, this needs a bit more care.

To print the A5 booklet

We strongly recommend you use thicker paper than normal, otherwise the printing is likely to show through to the other side of the paper. A minimum thickness of 100gsm (also called 100g/m2 or 100gm paper) is recommended but don’t go so thick that it won’t fold or go through your printer. In addition, make sure that you know whether the printer prints on the top or the bottom side of the paper sheets in the hopper.

Download and open the pdf file “HPS Slides to Digital A5” (You need an Adobe reader programme, which is free to download from the internet if you haven’t already got it.)

Click file, then print, and a box will appear on screen. Do NOT click on the printer icon that is below the menus as this will print all of the pages. On the small printer box, click properties, click page layout and then click scale to fit printer margins or minimise margins (the exact wording depends on your printer and its configuration. Click OK which will return you to the main print box.

Now in the print range section, select “Odd pages only” or enter the numbers “1,3,5,7,9,11,13,15,17,19” in the pages box and click OK.
(Remember that the page numbers at the bottom of the pages of the booklet are not the same as these numbers!)

The printer should now print 10 pages.

Take these 10 printed sheets and put them back in the hopper, with the first at the top, so that the printer will print on the unprinted side of the paper. In general, if your printer prints on the top of the paper then you can simply replace the paper in the hopper with the blank side on top. However, if your printer prints on the bottom of the paper then you will have to reverse the pages. Make sure that the left hand edge of the printing is pointing into the printer.

Repeat the printing command sequence - click file, then print, and a box will appear on screen. Click properties, click page layout, then click scale to fit printer margins or minimise margins (the exact wording depends on your printer and its configuration. Click OK, which will return you to the main print box. This time, in the print range section, select “Even pages only” or enter the numbers “2,4,6,8,10,12,1,4,1,6,18,20” and click OK.

Fold your booklet and secure with staples (or an elastic band).

Alternatively, your local small printers may well print it out for you for a nominal charge - download the pdf file to a memory stick or CD and take it along for a quote.
