About the Group

The Dorset Group of the Hardy Plant Society was formed in 1998. Our programme of first-class speakers has included Carol Klein, Matthew Wilson, Penelope Hobhouse, Timothy Walker, Fergus Garrett and Keith Wiley. The speakers usually bring their specialist plants for sale and we also sell plants grown by members at each meeting, as well as a few sundries. We publish an annual Magazine and a monthly news sheet to keep members up-to-date. During the summer we run at least one coach trip to a garden or a nursery, usually both, and a two or three day garden-visiting holiday.

We have also hosted two national HPS events, which attracted members from all over the country: ‘Penstemons on Parade’ at Kingston Maurward College, and ‘Summer’s Swansong’ led by Mary Payne and Neil Lucas, when we had a wonderful day studying late summer perennials in conjunction with Knoll Gardens. In February 2013 we are running a study day ‘Hurrah for Hellebores’.

Our indoor meetings are held at Colehill Memorial Hall, Cannon Hill Road, Wimborne BH21 2LR (map). Entry to meetings is free to members and we welcome visitors, who are charged £3.50. Celebrity lectures, special events and coach trips are charged to both members and visitors.

Our annual membership subscriptions are £5 single and £7 for two at one address. Membership of the Dorset Group is open to those who are members of the national Hardy Plant Society.

Please contact us if you would like more details about any of the events overleaf, or come along to any meeting as a visitor. We look forward to welcoming you.
