About the Group
Our group meets in Mayford Village Hall, Mayford, Woking, Surrey, GU22 0NN (map)
The Group’s name dates from the time when, as the second HPS Local Group to be established, we did cover the whole of the southern counties. As other groups have come into existence our membership is now drawn mainly from Surrey and South London, but members also come from further afield, including Middlesex, Kent, Sussex, Hampshire, Wiltshire and even France.
We hold six lectures a year, during the winter, including our renowned Christmas party in November. Most of these lectures include a plant sale and four of them take place in Mayford Village Hall, near Woking. Two lectures a year are held at Cobham Village Hall, just off the A3, to one of which, featuring a celebrity lecturer, we invite the general public. For the last few years we have hosted a biennial ’garden safari’ to which we invite a neighbouring Group. These culminate in a plant sale in one of the gardens. From May to September, we arrange visits to gardens in different counties, travelling by car, and an annual coach trip to gardens further afield. This year, for the first time, we are organising a 3-day coach trip, to visit gardens in Norfolk. In October we shall be representing the HPS at Wisley for the RHS Plant Society Open Day.
Our subscription is £3.00 per year for single membership and £4.00 for joint membership (two members at the same address).
