Hints

Keep the number of words that you are searching for as few as possible. You can always add more words if it returns too many results.

Remember that some names may be abbreviated. For example, “Saturday” may be shortened to “Sat”. If your normal search doesn't return the results that you want, use the abbreviated form with an asterisk at the end.

Searching for botanical and technical names can be difficult. Our web server certainly doesn't understand Latin so it thinks that Gladiolus and Gladioli are two completely different things. However, you can get more meaningful results if you understand two special characters:

Don't worry about capitals, the search system ignores them.

Remember that some names may be abbreviated. For example, “Saturday” may be shortened to “Sat”. If your normal search doesn't return the results that you want, use the abbreviated form with an asterisk at the end.

If you search for “aquilegia vulgaris” without changing anything, it will find all pages that contain the word “aquilegia” and all of the pages that contain the word “vulgaris” so it will find “aquilegia atrata” and “dracunculus vulgaris” as well as “aquilegia vulgaris”. Changing to “all search words” will only return pages that contain both “aquilegia” and “vulgaris” although they could be in completely different parts of the page. If you put your words into quotation marks (") then it will treat them as a phrase and only return those pages that contain that phrase. (For example, “aquilegia vulgaris”). However, you cannot use quotation marks together with question marks or asterisks as the system gets totally confused and looks for words with question marks or asterisks in them.
