Malvern Spring Show 2009
The HPS Staffordshire Group designed and put together an attractive and informative stand for the educational section of the Amateur Societies area at the RHS Malvern Spring Show 2009.
The purpose of the exhibit entitled, What’s in a Name?, was to help demystify the meanings and origins behind the names of some of the plants we see in our gardens. For example, whenever I see Sanguisorba menziesii in future I will think of Archibald Menzies, the surgeon-botanist from Scotland after whom it is named. During his travels to Hawaii he was referred to by the local inhabitants as the red-faced man who cuts off limbs of men and gathers grass!

The stand was awarded a bronze medal by the RHS and was also well received by the general public. Everyone who worked on it was pleasantly surprised and pleased at the high level of interest and membership enquiries generated.

Organising and manning a stand at a national event is a large undertaking for a local group and we would like to particularly thank the volunteers who helped us this year for the first time, as well as the many stalwarts who are there for us every year. More than 50 people were involved in various capacities, all fulfilling their part so that we were able to achieve a final result that was as good as that produced by the professionals. The stand was a credit to the Society and our members. We hope very much to be working with you all again next year!
