Southport Flower Show
“Liverpool – European Capital of Culture 2008” was this year’s theme for the North West Group’s silver medal-winning entry at the Southport Flower Show. Their display stand was divided into four areas, each illustrating one aspect of Liverpool’s heritage: Music and the Beatles, The Fine Arts, Football and Liverpool’s Maritime Heritage. The sail was a reminder of the visit of the Tall Ships to the port during the summer.
Bakewell Show
The Derbyshire Group’s theme at the Bakewell Show was “The Late Summer Garden”. It was greatly admired by the judges for the quality of the plants and the design of the stand, so much so that it was awarded a Large Gold Medal. It also attracted considerable interest from show visitors and was a great advertisement for the HPS. Congratulations to the team who put in much time and effort to achieve an excellent medal.
The Scottish and Northern Borders Group stand at “Gardening for Scotland” showed visitors to the show what the HPS and their local group is all about. Photographs and maps illustrated the wide range of activities that members of this most northerly HPS group, who are drawn from all over Scotland, can take part in. Despite the large area covered by the group, members organise regular garden visits and tours to Ireland, Cornwall and The Netherlands. Much interest was generated by their display and the attractive and diverse planting in the three container gardens.
